Hiding Behind Entertainment
Dear Friend,
As I did this piece, I was thinking about mass production, advertising bombardment to purchase what you can't afford and will be paying off for the next year...or five...and this time of year when people want so much stuff and if they don't get the latest and greatest they aren't happy. Actually, most aren't happy either way. Or they might be happy the first few days after they get what they want then are hit with reality that there is probably something already greater that they are missing out on. I bet around the block....down the street...over the river....on the other side of town...across the ocean there are people that would be happy just to get some bread or live another day.
Cheers to another day of capitalism
...or changing priorities. You choose.
Sincerely,
Angeles

Good stuff.
ReplyDeleteMay I ask what you have painted over in this image?
I just watched a classic Christmas movie; A Charlie Brown Christmas. All the mass consumerism and rampant greed that accompanies Christmas time has poor Charlie Brown feeling depressed. In an emotional decision to go against all this, Charlie buys a sickly looking Christmas tree for the school play. The true meaning of Christmas is realized when the children who at first mocked Charlie Brown’s tree come to see the true beauty in the tree and appreciate it in a whole new way.
I wonder if I am learning something from the pop culture or if I am still being entertained away from the more important issues and thereby allowing TV to make me dumber? Meh. . .
Kate,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!!
I painted over some ads...nothing specific this time. One of my huge pet peeves is mass consumerism and how thwarted our priorities and thinking on what our needs and wants really are. It's crazy, huh. I seem to be drawn to this subject so much and want do a large series in this subject. Have you hear of Ron English? I'm going to be doing a write up about him in the next couple of months. You should check out his art. It's amazing and really has some great messages in his work on this as well among other things going on in our world and america. hope you have a great Christmas!!
